Concert for a Cause: Music for Tanzania!

Tumaini University Makumira in Tanzania has the only full university level music department in all of Tanzania, and the most active in East Africa. Tanzania alone is twice the size of California! The music department, under the direction of Mr. Randall Stubbs, was able to obtain a significant grant from the EU to build a Cultural Arts Centre, to preserve and promote local tradition arts as well as Western music.

The grant will provide teaching and performance spaces for music and dance, a 1,200 seat multi-purpose auditorium, 300 seat covered amphitheatre, classrooms, music library, interactive cultural arts displays, store, music technology spaces and more on 13.5 acres purchased by the university for this purpose. The EU grant provides 60% of the funding, and the rest is funded through donations and locally generated revenue from music activities in Tanzania. The music department is still in need of musical instruments, especially a grand piano, and scholarships for students.
